People cancel Queensland vehicle registration for a few common reasons: the car is being permanently taken off the road, it’s being dismantled or disposed of, it’s been written off, the owner has moved interstate, or the rego simply isn’t needed anymore.
One thing worth clearing up first: selling a currently registered car doesn’t automatically mean you should cancel its registration. In most normal sales, the registration is transferred to the buyer, not cancelled. Cancellation is a separate process for when a vehicle is coming off the road for good.

Cancellation and transfer aren’t interchangeable, and using the wrong one can leave you linked to a car you no longer own. Not currently, despite what you might expect. Queensland Transport and Main Roads doesn’t offer a fully online rego-cancellation service β cancellation is processed through Form F3517 (Vehicle/Queensland Regulated Ship Cancellation of Registration Application), which needs to be completed, signed, and submitted in person, by mail, or by email.
You can download F3517 and fill it out digitally (in Adobe Reader) before printing or emailing it β that’s different from the whole process being online. TMR’s own online-services listing confirms rego cancellation isn’t one of the transactions currently available through their web portal.
This is exactly the kind of service that can change without much notice, so it’s worth checking TMR’s current online services list before you start, in case an online option has since been introduced.
To cancel your vehicle, trailer, caravan, motorised mobility device or boat registration, you need to complete and sign the cancellation of registration form (F3517).
Make sure:
If you’re cancelling five or more registrations at once, you only need to complete one form and attach the extra vehicle details separately.
If the registered operator has passed away: the executor, administrator or next of kin needs to transfer the registration into the estate (or to another person) before it can be cancelled, so any refund goes to the right person.
There are three official submission methods.
Take your completed form and number plates (unless you’re exempt β see below) to a transport and motoring customer service centre, a QGAP office, a Magistrates Court, or a local police station that provides registration services. Not every police station or court offers this β check before you travel.

Email submission only works if you’ve already surrendered your plates (and can attach the receipt), or you’re not required to surrender them β for example, you’re keeping personalised plates, your plates are lost/stolen/destroyed, or the vehicle’s written off. If you email your cancellation, TMR refunds by cheque, so make sure your mailing address on file is current.
Registration cancellation refund administration fee: $22.00 β current as at 1 July 2026.
This is an administration fee for processing the refund, and it’s deducted directly from whatever registration refund you’re owed β it’s not a separate bill. TMR fees typically update each financial year, so it’s worth checking the current TMR registration fee schedule before you cancel, especially if you’re reading this well after August 2026.

If your Queensland registration is current, registered in your name, and you’re cancelling it yourself (not as part of an insurance write-off claim taken over by the insurer), you may be entitled to a refund covering:

The $22 cancellation/refund administration fee is deducted from whatever you’re owed. There’s no published formula for an exact figure here, and any calculator promising one is guessing β the amount depends on how much unused registration and CTP time is left on your vehicle. Your best source for an exact number is TMR directly.
Queenslanders sometimes lump all of this together as “road tax,” but TMR breaks a light vehicle’s registration cost into three separate parts:
Your private comprehensive or third-party property insurance is a completely separate product from CTP and isn’t part of a TMR rego refund at all β if you’re cancelling insurance too, that’s a separate call to your insurer.
In most cases, Queensland requires you to hand in your number plates when you submit the cancellation form, and you’ll get a receipt for whatever you surrender. For a standard car issued with two plates, both plates normally need to be handed in (trailers, motorcycles and mobility devices only have one plate to surrender).
Surrendering is the standard, cleanest path for most cancellations.
Lost or stolen plates need to be declared in Section 7 of F3517. If plates were stolen, it’s worth checking with Queensland Police about reporting requirements for your situation.
Destroyed plates should also be declared in Section 7 β don’t destroy plates deliberately as a shortcut around surrendering them; declare the actual circumstances.
Yes. In Queensland, you can keep your personalised or customised plates when you cancel the vehicle’s registration β you don’t have to surrender them just because the rego is cancelled.
That’s different from actually cancelling the personalised/customised plates themselves. If you want to do that, you’ll need to:
If you’ve moved from interstate with personalised or customised plates, check with the relevant interstate authority on how those are handled β Queensland’s process may not directly apply.
Declare the actual situation in Section 7 of F3517 β whether that’s one plate missing, both missing, stolen, destroyed, already surrendered, or surrendered to an interstate authority. You don’t need to attach a surrender receipt when emailing your form if this applies to you.
Registering your vehicle in another state or territory does not automatically cancel your Queensland registration β you need to do that separately. When the interstate authority takes your Queensland plates, get a number plate surrender receipt and include it with your F3517 cancellation form. Once that’s processed, any eligible unused registration and CTP can be refunded.
If an insurer is involved in your claim, check with them before you cancel the registration yourself. Insurers often notify TMR of the write-off and may handle the registration cancellation as part of the claim β and if they take ownership of the registration, you may not be eligible for a refund of the unused portion.
If your vehicle hasn’t been assessed by an insurer, you’ll need to notify TMR of the write-off yourself when you lodge the cancellation. If you want your refund backdated to the day after the accident, you can declare that in Section 7 of F3517, provided the vehicle hasn’t been used since.

No β once registration is cancelled, don’t drive the vehicle on a public road unless you’re covered by another legal arrangement, such as an unregistered vehicle permit where that applies. Cancelling registration doesn’t come with a grace period.
You can submit your F3517 form and plates at any Brisbane customer service centre that offers registration services. A few useful options:
Brisbane City Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre and Sherwood Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre both currently offer vehicle registration services, along with Macgregor Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre on the southside.
Worth knowing before you drive there: Ipswich Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre is appointment-only, and currently handles new vehicle registrations, motor dealer services and pre-registration inspections rather than general registration transactions like cancellations, driver licensing or photo ID. For a standard rego cancellation, Bundamba Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre is the better option β it offers full vehicle and vessel registration services.

Both currently offer vehicle registration services.
Maroochydore Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre offers registration services. Be careful not to confuse it with the separate Maroochydore Queensland Government Service Centre nearby β that location does not handle transport or motoring transactions like registration or driver licensing; it’s a different type of government service centre entirely. This mix-up is common enough that TMR calls it out on their own centre listing.
Opening hours, appointment requirements and temporary closures change fairly often β TMR’s transport and motoring service centre finder is the most reliable way to check exactly what a specific centre offers and when, before you travel.
Cancelling when a transfer was actually needed. If you’re selling a currently registered car normally, transfer is usually the right process, not cancellation.
Forgetting to surrender plates when the standard process requires it.
Destroying plates unnecessarily instead of surrendering or correctly declaring them.
Accidentally surrendering personalised plates the owner wanted to keep.
Cancelling a written-off vehicle before checking with the insurer β this can affect who’s entitled to the refund.
Assuming interstate registration automatically cancels Queensland rego. It doesn’t β you still need to lodge F3517.
Expecting the full unused registration payment back. The traffic improvement fee and some levies aren’t refunded, and the $22 admin fee is deducted.
Treating private comprehensive insurance as part of the rego refund. It’s a separate product, handled by your insurer.
Can I cancel my Queensland rego online? Not currently β cancellation is processed through Form F3517, submitted in person, by mail or by email. TMR’s own online-services list doesn’t include registration cancellation.
How much does it cost to cancel car rego in QLD? There’s a $22.00 administration fee (current as at 1 July 2026), deducted from your refund.
How much refund will I get when I cancel my rego? You may get back the unused portion of your registration fee and CTP premium, minus the $22 admin fee. The traffic improvement fee and some other charges aren’t refunded. There’s no fixed formula β check with TMR for an exact figure.
Do I get my CTP money back? The unused portion of your CTP premium may be refundable as part of the cancellation, if your registration is current and in your name.
Do I have to surrender my number plates? Usually yes β both standard plates for a car. Exceptions apply for personalised/customised plates you’re keeping, lost/stolen/destroyed plates, written-off vehicles, and plates already surrendered to an interstate authority.
Can I keep personalised plates? Yes β you can cancel the vehicle’s registration and keep your personalised or customised plates. Cancelling the plates themselves is a separate process using Form F5339.
Where can I cancel my rego in Brisbane? Any TMR customer service centre offering registration services β Brisbane City, Sherwood and Macgregor are convenient options. Use the centre finder to check current hours.
Does registering interstate cancel my Queensland rego? No. You need to lodge Form F3517 separately, along with the plate surrender receipt from the interstate authority, to get any refund.
Should I cancel the rego if my car is written off? Check with your insurer first β they may handle the cancellation as part of your claim, and cancelling it yourself beforehand could affect your refund entitlement.
